"Hey Krishna - I did so much chanting and devotional service. I never thought of my own rest and luxuries - I spent my whole life serving You.. is this the way you reciprocate with your devotees? Now I have just one month to sort out everything in my life."
In striking contrast to the skill of resisting impulse, today the ability to act on impulse is celebrated as the proof of freedom.
Imagine you are driving a car and inching forward on a crowded street during peak traffic hours. All around you, there are noises and fumes as people try to make their way to work. Suddenly, the traffic comes to a standstill. "Oh no!" rises the frustrated cry, "Not another traffic jam!" Brakes screech, horns blare, people curse under their breaths. You feel your blood pressure rise; you will be late again.
The women's liberation movement took place in society largely due to the exploitation of women, and women in many parts of the world are still abused physically, sexually and emotionally. They are forced into certain types of demeaning roles and are generally considered to be second-class citizens.
We have seen that previous generations and empires have disappeared due to time, but we think that we are not under its influence. (One thing we can learn from history is that we do not learn from history.)
The Vedas predicted the bad and the good sides to this present age that we live in. Having passed through 5,000 years of Kali Yuga, there is a balance of 427,000 years.
Srila Prabhupada: Just look at this fig. In this one fig you find thousands of seeds – and each tiny seed is a whole new fig tree. Now, where is that chemist who can do such a thing: First make a tree, and then make the tree bear fruit, and next make the fruit produce seeds, and finally make the seeds produce still more trees? Just tell me. Where is that chemist?
The life we're living now is not our only one. We've been through many. The spark of awareness within us, the self, or soul, or whatever you want to call it, has no beginning and no end. No knife can cut it, no fire can burn it, no wind can blow it away. But that spark of life keeps moving on from one body to the next.
If you Respect me I will hear you.
If you Hear me I will feel understood.
If you Understand me I will feel appreciated.
If you Appreciate me I will feel your support.
If you Support me to take on my own responsibilities
I will become responsible.
Devotees are often so busy with their devotional activities that they have no time to do many of the things that most people feel are important and would not do without - for example reading the daily newspaper
Two friends were walking through a desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument and one of them slapped the other in the face. Although it hurt, he didn't say anything, but rather wrote in the sand : "Today my best friend slapped me in the face".
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
"Jesus is the only way!" Not an uncommon cry, in this day and age. Many Christians believe that Christ proclaimed himself to be the "Way, the Truth and the Life," and that "no one shall come to the Father but through me."
This analogy is relevant to us all as to how we choose to live our life and what are the most important things.
